What is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is water that has undergone an electrolytic ionizing process which causes ions to become free. To do this the water must contain some trace minerals (which in themselves are beneficial to the body). Although regular water may contain ions and in fact be alkaline, ionization adds further electrical energy at a molecular level to the water, causing it to behave and interact differently to regular "flat" water.

Alkaline Water is much healthier than regular water especially when it is clean and properly filtered so it has much more antioxidant properties. The creation of Alkaline Water begins eliminating impurities by a filtration   and electrolysis method separating regular water into two different molecules, one being positive acidic molecules and one having negative alkaline molecules. The pH of drinking water is 8.5- 9.5 and the pH of acidic water used for topical applications is 2.5- 6.5

Ionized alkaline water is high in antioxidants that promote and protect health in your body. Antioxidants are found in the foods we eat and they fight the free radicals that destroy our health on a cellular level.  Maintaining the proper balance between alkaline and acidic is essential to process food in our body for healthy living.  A diet of food and drinks high in Acidic properties will cause your body’s pH to drop to dramatic levels. Consumption of Alkaline Ionized Water on a daily basis can help regulate your pH levels returning you to homeostasis.

Regular tap water has large, less active molecule clusters making it difficult to pass through membranes and hydrate your cells.  Ionized Alkaline Water contains natural anti-oxidants, and High Alkaline properties which have smaller molecules that pass easier through cell walls. Dehydration of cells in your body is severely hazardous to your health. Without effective hydration your cells can die much earlier than necessary or fail to function properly. By drinking Alkaline Ionized Water you are taking the proper steps it takes to maintain ultimate health by keeping yours cells well hydrated.

pH

pH Chart"pH" is an acronym for the "potential of hydrogen" and is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+)  and is the accepted measure of alkalinity and acidity . The scale ranges from a maximum acidity which is a pH of zero to a maximum of 14 which is completely alkaline. Exactly half way at 7, a substance is neutral – ie neither acid nor alkaline. Using a logarithmic scale, one pH unit is a tenfold shift of the concentration of hydrogen ions. The pH of 4 is ten times more alkaline than the pH of 3 and 100 times that of 2. This demonstrates that just a minor change of the pH factor is really a massive shift. This factor is extremely important to the human body especially in the blood where the pH range should be between 7.30 and 7.45 which will show the amount of oxygen available in the circulatory system to be delivered to each cell. Metabolic acidosis is a significant factor in most diseases and low oxygen levels in the blood can be a huge part of creating this damaging condition. It has been proven that any disease including cancer will not live in an environment rich in oxygen as it binds readily with free ions (such as hydrogen to omake water). Drinking alkaline ionized water will aid the body’s natural defences to eliminate acidic waste and toxins trapped in your body. Keep in mind that the process of ionizing water does not eliminate the impurities in it. Ionization cannot occur with water void of minerals so you cannot use water that has undergone reverse osmosis or distillation.  Water that has been ionised may still contain impurities if not treated first with something such as carbon filtration. Anywhere you find water naturally on earth will contain minerals even if it is the cleanest purest source. Our bodies require certain minerals to remain healthy, so as long as there are no impurities or toxins in your water ionization and alkalisation can improve health.

Ionized Water in Detail

The ionization of water with a water ionizer creates some very interesting effects which can only be described properly at molecular/atomic level. At a molecular level, water is an incredible atomic structure. With two hydrogen atoms bonded tightly to a single oxygen atom, the molecule is incredible robust. However a little discrepancy in the water molecule’s electrical balance, the hydrogen-oxygen bond can easily be broken by ionization. Unlike the myths about producing energy in this way (hydrogen to burn as fuel and oxygen with it), to completely separate the atoms is extremely energy inefficient and will never likely be a future form of green energy. However, with only a small amount of electrical energy something else happens. Instead of the water molecules breaking apart into hydrogen and oxygen, the hydrogen atoms skip from one oxygen atom to another. Ionization of water creates (as the name suggests) ions. For those with limited physics knowledge, and ion is a charged particle – a free electron.  The presence of ions allows the hydrogen atoms to “hop” around”.  The best analogy is to that of a box of steel magnetized balls. If  these imaginary magnetic balls are a mixture North Poles, and South Poles, the balls that are the same, (as per the laws of magnetism) will attract; opposite poles will repel. This could potentially cause a constant motion of the balls in an enclosed space which in comparison to a liquid, was being moved constantly, agitating the balls.

This scenario is the same as the atoms in ionized water. The ions provide the “pole-pole” repelling action and the close bonding between oxygen and hydrogen the attraction. The end result is an unbelievably active substance. Hydrogen bonds being broken and remade in a constant motion that takes only a femtosecond (10 -15 seconds or one million-billionth of a second) to achieve. At this exchange speed, ionized water molecules can exchange hydrogen atoms a millions of times per second.

Ionized Water Micro-Clustering

Water molecules have already been described as possessing some strange qualities with hydrogen atoms bouncing around like crazy. A strange phenomenon is that water forms clusteds which contain usually 50-100 molecules. They move so quickly as we explained, that it is hard to count the number in a single cluster as you cannot stop them still for long enough to count them. However it is possible to estimate these numbers through high speed still photography using electron microscopes. Ionization reduces the cluster size and increases the exchange rate of ions making it even more hyperactive. The smaller cluster size is quite possibly how osmosis through cell walls is optimized with ionized water.

(At molecular level, water has some amazing properties, many of which we take for granted. The crystalline formation of ice and snow, the fact that water is less dense when a solid (very unusual in comparison to other naturally abundant molecules), the ability to latch onto other molecules so readily, a huge surface tension that is only surpassed by liquid metals like mercury and even its use by our DNA as a lubricant for the essential process of 'protein folding' which occurs in every cell and is the cornerstone of human physiology and biochemistry.

Water is extremely active when liquid, forming molecular clusters which are small "blobs" of molecules loosely bound by ionic bonding. In normal water an individual cluster contains about 70-100 molecules. In ionized water, there is a much more ready exchange of ions so the clusters have less cohesive force, making the cluster size about 1/3rd the size they were, containing about 30 molecules per cluster. From an osmosis perspective alone this makes ionized water more readily absorbed by the body so hydration is more efficient. Despite claims that ionized water clusters are 'hexagonal in some way (a myth related to frozen water at -90C), the smaller clusters also mean an increased surface- volume ratio of the cluster. This makes interaction with other molecules (ie free radicals/toxins) also more efficient – its like hiring a new and improved cleaning service to operate in your body; one that works all day very day.

Water clusters themselves change shape in one million billionth of a second and do so continuously, so there is no single cluster shape, more like an untied and loose bag of marbles being agitated. With Ionized water, the bag is smaller and more agitated so the molecules move around more and leave the untied bag at random; others enter from another cluster to make up the difference. This exchange of molecules goes on ad infinitum, and is increased by temperature and reduced by pressure. Water molecule clusters do not form any particular shape (until you reduce the temp to below 90C as stated earlier) being naturally amorphous and elastic in nature. These smaller clusters can pass through a cell wall more readily and the free ion exchange combined with the rapid dispersion of molecules exchanged between clusters makes rehydration (osmosis) using alkaline water very efficient. It the same reason athletes drink electrolytes before/after performing, so that they rehydrate efficiently!))

Hexagonal Water (A Myth Except at -90C)

Liquid water retains no consistent formThere is considerable content online which labels ionized water molecules as hexagonal in shape supposedly offering special properties that have no scientific basis in reality. As explained, ionized water molecules have highly active hydrogen particles which jump around and change their parent oxygen atom at blistering speed and frequency. For this reason alone it would not be possible for water to form a hexagonal structure as is described by some. Science can easily show this through electron microscopy, which shows the expected behaviour of very active hydrogen.

 

The hexagonal structure of ice

Hexagonal molecular structure cannot exist in a liquid for any time or in an appreciable scale as it would create too rigid a structure – i.e. a solid. In fact hexagonal molecules form crystals. At below minus 90oC, water has lost sufficient energy to stop this hydrogen exchange and it crystallizes as there is no energy left for the hydrogen atoms to jump around so they form the most efficient shape for a collection of 3 sided objects, a hexagonal structure. In this case, as water is a 3 atom molecule (required for a hexagon to form) hexagonal molecular shapes do exist at low temperatures. Even regular ice molecules are not static and reform clusters albeit more slowly than in a liquid, but highly mobile and fluid all the same. The electron microscope picture to the left shows that indeed water does become hexagonal in structure when frozen, but when liquid, these crystalline shapes disintegrate as the molecules have energy and become active. Ionised water is highly energetic so is more like a bag full of busy bees, like the diagram to the right. You cannot have a static lattice or clumps of hexagonal water - there is simply too much energy available in the water. This is the energy that helps to heal your body and could not exist if the structure was rigid as in the poorly researched "hexagonal water molecule" theory.

Some Ionized Water Science

If you understood our small lesson in physics a little we can move on to some basic biochemistry. Nothing too stretching. The alkalinity of ionized water is a result of the process itself and offers benefits in terms of taste, palatability and the acid-reducing effect it has in your system. Alkalinity itself is not likely to do much more than this as it will be neutralized in the stomach on ingestion. However, the alkalinity is due to free ions in the water (hence, ionization). These free ions have some interesting effects. Not only is the water highly active, it is also very good at providing chemical bonds to substances which are toxic to the body. Its like using a magnet to clear up a box of tacks spilled on a carpet. This can help your body cleanse toxins much more efficiently than with an acidic body physiology, which many of us have due to the amount of acidic drinks and food we ingest. The toxic reduction alone due to the reduction in free radicals is an important step in getting your health back in line.

 

Oxidant/Antioxidant

A lot is spoken about free radicals, toxins and acidosis of the body so what is the issue with anti-oxidants? It can be very confusing. Basically, as we explained in the pH section the presence of excess ions is the result of electrolysis/ionisation. Whether there are excess hydrogen ions or a oxygen ions depends on which end of the anode/cathode you are looking at. One produces acids (oxygen ion deficient) and the other, an alkaline which has an excess of these ions and is a negative oxidising agent. The Oxygen Reduction Potential (ORP) of alkaline water is said to be negative so it actually rejects bonds with oxygen. Acidic compounds also known as free radicals, (toxins to the layman) are oxygen hungry as they have an ion deficiency (no not iron!). This makes them combine with oxygen readily causing oxidation. The result is fewer oxygen molecules available to the physiological and biochemical processes of the human body. Acidic foods are oxidising agents and have the same oxygen-robbing effect. Ingesting alkaline water in between meals can offset the acidosis that creeps up on most people as they drink acidic alcohol, coffee and soft drinks - cutting these out can make a big difference - drinking antioxidant Kangen Water™ can make an even bigger one!

Water and Osmosis

The key to hydration throughout the body and the way that water moves around is through a process called osmosis. If this process did not exist it would be impossible to absorb water that you drink, and impossible for individual cells to get the water they need to function properly. Removing waste form the blood and cells is another key player in the osmosis game. The way osmosis works is related to ions. Creating free ions on one side of a cell wall causes water to move through the organic molecules that make up the cell wall. Hydrating or dehydrating the cell or structure beyond. Ionizing water appears to enhance osmosis. It is thought this may be due to the high exchange of ions which allows it to move faster across cell membranes. This enhanced ability for water to move around the body is why ionized water makes people feel better. There are so many accounts of this by users that there seems little doubt that there is a considerable benefit to drinking ionized water regularly.
